Thanksgiving and Other Holiday Survival Tips

I think just about every blogger writes some tips for staying healthy and not gaining weight during the holidays so I thought I'd join in on the trend this year. I don't know about you, but I'll take all the help I can get! RCM Personal Training (aka me) produces a monthly newsletter and guess what was found in November's edition? Check out my top 3 tips for making it through holiday dinners and parties. Then hop over to big time runner and blogger Run Eat Repeat for some of hers as well. 1. Fill Your Plate Yes, you read that correctly. A lot of times in our attempt to stay in control of our food we put an unrealistically small amount on our plate and praise ourselves for the empty space. Unfortunately, you're usually still hungry! Putting only a meager amount of your favorite foods on your plate will leave you unsatisfied and likely lead to overeating when you go back for seconds, pick at leftovers after dinner is over or give in to temptation and overcom...

What's for Breakfast?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! I know you've never heard that before but that's why you read my blog, for groundbreaking revelations. via Seriously though, there are a lot of reasons that breakfast is important to eat. It gets your motor revved up for the day, feeding your brain early and often keeps it focused and eating early can actually help stave off cravings or excessively large meals later in the day that can leave you feeling sluggish. That said, here's a quick post about my top 3 favorite fast and easy breakfasts. *Disclaimer* These are not  the most nutritionally beneficial meals in the world. If you have time a very full and balanced breakfast with fruits and vegetables is best. But for people like me, I take what I can get. 1. Oatmeal I may or may not be obsessed with oatmeal and may or may not have paid for imported Canadian oatmeal based solely on a television show and clever advertising. Luckily, it's actually really really ...

Graze Box - Try it FREE!

Hey friends! Super excited to tell you about a new thing I'm totally into and to of course, pass the info on to you! A few weeks ago I was watching tv and a commercial came on for something called a Graze Box . Somehow it managed to get my attention and keep it long enough for me to visit the website and look around. The way it works is you can order these boxes and they come with 4 portioned snacks. Since I'm always looking for ways to add variety to my incredibly boring diet I was excited to try some new things. What I really liked about this was the price ($6.99 per box including shipping) and the transparency. They provide nutrition facts and an ingredient list with every box so you have the deets on what exactly is in your box. The biggest benefit is the convenience. I'm a lazy  city girl so I love convenience so much I'm willing to pay for it. Just like I'll pay higher taxes to live in the city and not pay for trash pickup, I'll pay $6.99 for a box ful...

Vietnam Kitchen

I don't feel that I've taken true advantage of my Vegetarian in the Ville name so I did a little recon over the weekend to bring you a fun new (to me) little vegetarian friendly restaurant right here in Louisville. Vietnam Kitchen is a little restaurant located in the South End and is apparently kind of a big deal. What can I say? I don't get out much. But we were being spontaneous and adventurous so we hopped in the car, pulled up the map app and typed in Thai food. Nothing withing 5 minutes. So we switched to Vietnamese. The first restaurant we got to was closed. The app said they closed at 9 but it was actually 8. Which in real time meant they locked the doors at 10 till. Alright. Back in the car for the next closest place. It was a cool little place and had two very  important attributes that make it a new staple in my diet. A full page of vegetarian dishes (talk about overwhelming) And ginger ale...because I'm 60. At least. I started with the mos...

New Beginnings

What a day! I'm a creature of habit. Not sure if you know that. But as a creature of habit I try to avoid change entirely or at least make changes very slowly as not to get overwhelmed. Unfortunately that didn't quite work with the new job plus training for a new race. I started full time at my new job on the 1st and so far it's been pretty great! There's a LOT to learn but I'm hanging in there and luckily since it's interesting I'm retaining info pretty well. The trouble is adjusting to the new schedule. For starters, I don't work the same hours everyday. I also don't have the two days in a row off over the weekend anymore and start my days much later than I'm used to. I'm definitely not complaining about being able to move 5am workouts to 7am but it does take some adjusting. Speaking of workouts, I'm doing a lot of them. My new coach has got me going 6 days a week and the distances are a lot more than I've been used to. Over the pas...

It's Thanksgiving Time!

It's probably no surprise that I don't like Thanksgiving. Like...at all.... BUT like a good little 'Murican I celebrate with the best of em and contrary to popular belief, I also eat. Not a lot. But I do eat. Last year we went meat free which was awesomely impressive, particularly for my carnivorous and not at all interested in changing her ways mother. This year I'm not so lucky but that's ok. The menu is planned, at least on my part and a big thanks to GreenBEAN Delivery for helping me with that part. Basically what happened is this. We usually get our bin on Tuesdays but the holiday changed the schedule so we got it Monday. With a Tuesday delivery I have until Monday afternoon to "customize" my bin, meaning replacing things I might not like for whatever I want. Well since everything shifted up a day I missed my chance to customize and ended up with what they gave me. Well done GreenBEAN because we hit a nice little Thanksgiving jackpot! Yams, Cran...

Food Issues and the Female Athlete Triad

This is a post that I've written and re-written, started and re-started about a hundred times but I think the recent developments in my injured status have sort of brought things to light and I feel like now is as good a time as ever to open up just a bit on this blog with something personal and probably something that effects more people than would like to admit it. I can't say that I have or have ever had an eating disorder but I can confidently say that I have had and may still have a pattern of disordered eating. For anyone who isn't familiar with the term, there are a billion different definitions of who a "disordered eater" is but for my purposes I refer to myself as such because I do not eat like I would say a "normal" person does. It has nothing to do with being a vegetarian and it's not that I just don't eat. I also don't binge eat or have an obsession with healthy eating known as orthorexia . But I can't deny that I don't ...

Long Weekend Long Run

See what I did there?  As everyone else is discussing the long weekend I went with discussing my long run. Oh Marathin Monster. You have consumed my entire being. After a very successful Track Tuesday I sat on the couch never to run again. That's a lie. But I didn't run again the rest of the week. Saturday the plan was to hit the always scary 16 mile mark for the long run. Why I had such a hard time getting out of bed I will never know. But I peeled myself from bed, stumbled along in the dark cursing as I stepped on random bits of things (wood floors hold a tremendous amount of debris) and made it to the kitchen for breakfast. Close to 7am Autumn sent me the text I always secretly wish she will send saying she couldn't run. I was disappointed initially but upon letting my dog outside and closing the door sweating I didn't feel too bad about the decision to skip. I tried to lay back down on the couch but no real luck falling asleep so I got on Facebook to see a post...

Ironman Louisville 2013

Well my friends, I am suffering from a serious Ironman hangover! A wise person once said the Ironman is like Christmas but the days after are like a New Year's hangover and truer words have never been spoken. Although I didn't race (um, duh) I still managed to keep busy all weekend. Saturday morning Autumn and I got up for a 14 mile run at 6:30 and it was largely uneventful until the end. We tried a new hydration product we got at the Ironman Expo called zipfizz . Jury is still out on it but I may do a little product review after this week's training. The last 3 miles started to get tough and something about passing up that 13.1 mark hurts a lot. But it wasn't until the last half mile that I wanted to lay down and cry. Oddly enough, I never ended up terribly sore from that run and actually felt recovered pretty quickly afterwards. Funny how proper (ish) training works. Anyway, after the run I took The Colonel to pick up the moving truck so he and his friend cou...

Friday Free for All

Since completing the Peru recap my head has literally been swimming with blog ideas. Every thought I have becomes "That would make a great blog!" As you can see, they have yet to actually materialize. So here is a bullet list of those thoughts in hopes that at least some of them may go somewhere but at the very least, they'll GET OUT OF MY HEAD! My current priority list consists of having a place to live and being able to afford it. What does that mean? Moving and work. I doubt I've mentioned it but I am currently moving out of my apartment into a significantly larger house in the prestigious South Louisville neighborhood. Google it and you'll be really jealous. What that means though is that every spare moment when I'm not at work (to afford the place to live) I am packing or moving things to the new place. It's fun-ish and I'm glad to have the house and the time we have to move everything but the split household is starting to get a little dicey. ...

Loving the I-P-A-D

Hey friends! Im joining you from my borrowed iPad this evening! There is a resident at work who gets to use one in dialysis and insists on calling it an I-p-a-d saying each letter instead of by its Apple approved name. It is adorable. Since I typically try to keep things positive here in the vile I haven't been blogging much because I haven't been feeling particularly positive. Aside from the engagement not many good things have been happening so since I had almost nothing nice to say I took the oath of silence. If you aren't a close friend of mine who has had to hear my cries you should thank me. In the interest of positivity, here are 10 positive things I can think of right now: 1. Today was my day off and it was spent almost entirely on the couch. 2. I have jobs to have occasional days off from. 3. I'm still engaged and my ring is still pretty. 4. I'm already within 7 pounds of my end of summer weight loss goal. 5. I have a meeting with my top wedding...
