Marathon Bucket List

I know the title can be misleading so to clarify, this is a bucket list of marathons I'd like to run. Not just a really long bucket list. I'm keeping it to a top 10 because any list longer than 10 is just too long. This post was inspired by my new blog friend Eat Pray Run DC. If you haven't read her blog, you should, because it's prettier than mine. Anyway, here we go, in no particular order...

1. Marine Corps Marathon

People who have run it never shut up about it so it must be great. Plus it's in DC and hello, Marines. Ooo rah.

2. New York City Marathon

Since I was born in New York and lived there for a bit it holds quite a place in my heart. It's another one of those epic races people can never say enough good things about. My only hesitation is that I'll really need to get over that thing I have about bridges. (get it? "get over"...bridges...)

3. Boston Marathon - as a charity runner of course

Let's get one thing straight. I'll never qualify for Boston. I'm not fast. This has been discussed before and even though I'm going to make an effort to speed up a bit I'm just not built for Boston. That said, I am built for fundraising so who wants to donate?

4. London Marathon

For some reason I've never really wanted to go to London. I'm certainly not against it but since it seems to always be rainy I've always just imagined going in a "just passing through" manner where I saw all the big sites then journeyed on. No offense to the Brits of course. But what better way to see the sites than joining an affordable tour group running a marathon? Oh, it's also HUGE.

5. Athens Marathon

I don't really think I need to explain this but just in case, Greece is where the marathon started. So there's that. There's also some history there and some kind of water. I've been to Greece and have been determined to go back ever since.

6. Chicago Marathon

Chicago is obnoxiously out of reach because it's not terribly far away from me but for some reason with the stupid lottery system it seems like it's just not meant to be. But I love Chi-town from the one time I've been there and it won't cost me an arm and a leg to get there.

7. Big Sur Marathon

Can you just look at the picture?

8. Great Wall Marathon

Marathoning means you already have a love/hate relationship with your body so why not just destroy it on hundreds of thousands of stairs across the most epic wall in the world?

9. Niagara Falls International Marathon

Due to my obsession with the great nation to my north it would only make sense that I'd want to run a race that actually takes place there. Niagara Falls is on my bucket list of places to visit anyway and I'm a sucker for good scenery.

10. Inca Trail Marathon

Remember that time I went to Peru? Well when I was there I heard a lot of talk about this Inca Trail and how beautiful and challenging and amazing it was and thought man, I should hike that trail one day. Who knew there was an associated marathon! I'll take that instead and give you back your 10 days of hiking.

Why I Hate the Ironman

I figure it's about time to put this out there and I'm pretty sure if you know me really well, you won't be surprised by any of what I have to say. I've been having a lot of issues lately. I've been working hard with my counselor to determine who I really am and what brings me true joy in life and it's been surprising, frustrating, difficult, fun, exhausting, enlightening, exciting and hard....to sum it up in a few words. I spent some time in Puerto Rico back in March and finally got back into doing some writing while I was out there. It wasn't anything long and certainly not anything particularly newsworthy but it made me feel good. I enjoy writing. When I was young I used to write short fiction stories on my mom's computer whenever I had free time and though a lot of them remained unfinished, they were always fun for me and surprisingly effortless to compose. Blogging has never quite been the same as my true writing and I've been working hard t

A Sad Announcement

It is with a very heavy heart that I make an announcement. Because this is where I spend so much time recapping my races and weight loss struggles and successes, it seems that this is where the announcement needs to be made. I told The Colonel earlier this evening when I got home from school close to tears and I need to make it official before I change my mind. I will not be doing an olympic triathlon this year. Sounded much more serious than that, didn't it? Well all joking aside, it is serious to me. In my mind, I'm now a quitter. I'm a wimp. I'm giving up on my goals and soon will start giving up on all of them. This isn't the case of course but for now it's really hard for me to be rational. I am a goal setter and rarely has there ever been a goal I didn't *eventually* reach. So for me to seriously and actually "give up" is heartbreaking. I'm also abandoning my quest to lose 40 more pounds this year. It would be great if it happened, but I

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 10K Race Recap

Wow, what a title right? Although I also could have titled it the greatest race of my life. Wanna know why? Yeah I thought you might. The week leading up to the race wasn't a great one. Stress at work, general grumpiness etc. etc. etc. So I really wasn't expecting much as far as performance but I wanted to get a 10K in really badly before the marathon relay this Saturday so I thought What the hell and signed up. The atmosphere at Komen events is like none other. Pink everywhere and people....so...many...people. For someone who hates crowds (i.e. ME) there are few things that will lure me to a crowded place. Races just tend to be one of those things. Anyway, there was a great survivors parade and all kinds of booths and music and general funness. What there wasn't plenty of was parking. Which I guess is the norm for an event of this caliber. Survivors' Parade Great Ladies I never got the chance to meet... Seriously packed at the start! Autumn Alexis, The Colonel and I g
